When most of us home workers think of exercising to get fit & healthy we think that we need to be spending hours in the gym doing long boring cardio sessions on the treadmill.

And sometimes the excitement of running your own home business means you are reluctant to step away from it for even half an hour. It's tricky to fit exercise in, isn't it?

Not so according to 39 year old Richard Morris. In fact he reckons you only need to work out for 10 – 20 minutes to achieve the body that you’ve always wanted by doing High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT); the new fitness craze that’s arrived in the UK in 2013.

HIIT is the ‘buzz’ word in the fitness industry at the moment, however fitness expert Morris has been using this method of training for many years with his clients. Richard is one of the UK's leading HIIT instructors; he has just completed a UK tour on HIIT Training and has spoken at some of the UK’s top fitness conventions regarding this training method.  

Richard says, 'The sessions will be more intense than steady paced cardio and you will be working near your maximum heart rate, which may put some people off this type of training.

However the benefits far outweigh the 10-20 minutes of heart pumping workout that you will endure.

HIIT will not only have you burning more fat in your workout but it will also boost your metabolism and have you burning calories at a much higher rate for up to 24 hours after your workout has finished. This is known as the ‘Afterburn’ or EPOC (excess post calorie consumption).'

So you'll still be burning calories whilst you're sat back at your desk pouring over your business start-up plans, or whilst you're sleeping?

Richard states, 'You don’t need any fancy equipment to do this type of training. 90% of the workouts I do with my clients are bodyweight exercises like squats, push-ups, lunges, burpee jumps and high knees. When I do use equipment I just use a Megaband which is a lightweight portable band, and it’s like having your own portable gym machine.'

HIIT also stimulates production of your growth hormone (HGH) by up to 450% during the 24 hours after your workout has finished. HGH is not only responsible for increased caloric burn, it is also responsible for slowing down the aging process.

Where Did HITT Begin?

So where did this new fitness craze come from?

Richard explains, 'It’s named after a Japanese scientist called Izumi Tabata, who did a study on steady pace cardio and working in short intervals of 20 second work periods with a short 10 second rest period. His study showed that by doing just four minutes of HIIT improved aerobic capacity and helped burn fat.'
